Just finished bolting all the bits together for the chassis. Actually I’m not too sure if locomotives have a chassis, I think it might be a frame, but whatever it is, it’s now bolted together. Discovered a bit of a cock up in that when i’d quartered the cranks I’d but a drive and coupling crank on each axle, rather than drives on one and coupling ones on the other. I’ve swapped over the cranks now, but it means the cross-drilled holes on the axle are now in the wrong place, so I probably need to make new axles, though I might be able to bodge it and just requarter by loclite and forget the cross drilling.

Frame spacer that I forgot to make in the first batch, roll pins that lock the cranks on the axles and rivets hammered into the front beam.

Drive crank pins temporarily glued in cranks. Coupling crank pins. Coupling rods with bushes pressed in.

The cranks - drilled, reamed and tapped.
Still need cross drilling onto the axle, but that won’t happen till quartering.

Quite a bit more faff to make than I expected. Tapping little 8BA threads is trickier than I thought and the taper tap had a tendency to strip out some of the existing thread. Starting with a plug tap helped things a bit, but some of the end holes haven’t got as much thread as I wanted, so I may have to try and drill the holes deeper and add a bit more thread. My only concern is that in re drilling I might remove the existing thread.
On top of that when I looked main frames after making the spacers, I realised that I needed 7 spacers rather than 6. I’ll have to make the 7th one later.

Axles.
Still need cross-drilling for the cranks.

Axle bushes, and various connecting rod bushes turned from Phosphor Bronze. I stuck a penny in the photo to give scale.
